DSE hosts international disability swimming championships in Sheffield 18-20 May 2007
Over 250 swimmers from 15 countries will compete in the British International Disability Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield next weekend. The championships are the biggest international disability swimming event in the country. Both the British World Class and Performance Squads will be representing Britain against competitors from Australia, Canada, Iceland and Singapore amongst others. With such great British talent on show, a number of records are likely to be broken.
These championships come hot on the heels of the Visa Paralympic World Cup which took place in Manchester last weekend. Nyree Lewis who took Gold in the S6 100m Backstroke and Silver in the SM6 200m Individual Medley, will once again face tough competition. Other British stars to watch out for at the championships are Claire Cashmore, Natalie Jones.
The championships are organised by Disability Sport Events with support from both Nationwide Building Society and British Swimming.
In November 2005 Nationwide Building Society announced that it was to become the main sponsor of Disability Sport Events in a deal worth £1 million over the next seven years. The news came after five years of partnership between the two organisations and will help DSE to increase participation from regional to international level in both swimming and athletics. It will also help with talent identification and team selection in the run-up to the Paralympics over the seven years.
British Swimming announced at DSE’s Short Course Championships in November their service level agreement with Disability Sport Events, which included support of the long course championships.
Commenting on the partnership Charles Reed, Divisional Director for Nationwide Building Society said:
“Nationwide Building Society is proud to be associated with, and support the work of, DSE. Our relationship with DSE has been a great example of how organisations can make a positive difference and we are delighted to assist DSE with encouraging participation in sport through this partnership. By giving support where the champions start their road to success - at the grass roots level - and beyond we hope that our sponsorship will provide a starting block for all young people in disability sport. We wish all competitors at the championships the very best of luck.”
Other partners assisting the championships are Water Direct, Ponds Forge and the Sheffield City Council's Major Sports Events Unit.
