MONTREAL – Marie-Ève Marleau of Montreal won two gold medals on Saturday at the 12-country CAMO International diving competition.
Marleau won the women’s 10-metre tower then joined forces with Émilie Heymans of St-Lambert, Que., for the win in the synchronized 10-metre event.
On women’s individual 10-metre tower, Marleau took the gold with a personal best 377.90 points. Olympic bronze medallist Loudy Wiggins of Australia was second at 360.25 and Émilie Heymans of St-Lambert, Que., was third at 344.25.
‘’I had a tough prelims but I came back strong in the final,’’ said Marleau. ‘’The hard work has paid off. I was most pleased with my consistency and the confidence I had in the final. I wasn’t super stressed and the crowd created a great setting and atmosphere and I was really into it.’’
The competition is also a Canadian team selection meet for the FINA World Cup in February and Marleau and Heymans took the two available spots on tower.
Jennifer Abel of Montreal was sixth, Rachel Kemp of Victoria seventh, Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal ninth and Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., ninth.
In the 10-metre synchro event, Marleau and Heymans were first at 339.93 with Filion and Benfeito second at 314.40 and Sarah Barrow and Monique McCarroll of Britain third at 310.20.
‘’It was a very good competition for us,’’ said Heymans, who won a Grand Prix gold and the Pan Am Games title with Marleau earlier this year. ‘’Our score was consistent with what we’ve been doing all year. We got off to a great start with big scores on our compulsories and built from there.’’
Marleau and Heymans also meet the qualifying score for the FINA World Cup in the 10-metre synchro event.
In junior competition Canada won six more medals. Frederique Lalonde of Montreal and Molly Schupbach of Victoria were 1-2 in the girls 12-13 one-metre; François Imbeau-Dulac and Bertrand Blier, both of Montreal, were second and third in the men’s 16-18 three-metre; C.J. Moore took bronze in the boys 12-13 platform as did Olivier Morneau-Ricard of Quebec City in the boys 14-15 thee-metre.
