Diamonds lament ill discipline in first Test defeat
The Australian Diamonds are lamenting a lack of discipline in last night’s loss to the New Zealand Silver Ferns in the first Test of the Constellation Cup in Invercargill.
The Silver Ferns drew first blood in the five-Test series on Sunday night with a 55-51 victory over the Diamonds, who head into Thursday's second Test at Auckland’s Vector Arena needing victory to avoid returning home trailing the series.
Australia struggled to adjust in defence and capitalise on turnovers in attack.
“We know we have to be a whole lot more competitive under the ring with the penalties and understand that we can’t be out of play,” Geitz said after her first Test as captain.
“If we get that right then we’ll win more of the ball but I thought there were some really great passages of play in defence tonight. It’s hard to win the ball off an attack end like that so we need to consolidate on the turnovers.”
Coach Lisa Alexander said there was plenty to work on heading into the second Test.
“We’ll adjust some of our defence and make sure we’re in play, that’s the key. We don’t want to be giving Maria (Tutaia) or Irene (van Dyk) too many penalty shots because you need to build pressure over the game.” Alexander said.
“Indecision (cost us), not letting balls go and not playing the game plan that we talked about because as soon as you start to hesitate in our game that’s when you’re going to get yourself into a pickle.”
Despite the result, Geitz found plenty of positives from the match after the Diamonds trailed by as many as 11 goals in the final term before outscoring the Silver Ferns 9-4 in the last eight minutes of the fourth quarter, to get to within three goals.
“We’re disappointed with the loss but there are still a lot of positives that we can take out of that game; it was a great fight back at the end but we also fought back during the game as well which is a promising sign,” Geitz said.
The Australian Diamonds take on the New Zealand Silver Ferns in the second Test of the 2013 Constellation Cup at Vector Arena in Auckland on Thursday at 5.40pm (AEST).
The second Test of the 2013 Constellation Cup will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS 1 from 5.00pm (AEST) and SBS 2 from 5.30pm (AEST).
