First national title for Desforges after coming close earlier this season

MONT SAINTE-ANNE, QC (March 21st, 2008) – Emilie Desforges (Montréal, QC) captured the first Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships title of her career today after coming agonizingly close earlier this season.

The 2008 Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships continued today in Québec with Deforges, who had already finished second in the Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships super G and super combined this season, finishing today in a two-run combined time of two minutes 21.41 seconds.

“I am very happy to finally step on the top of the podium. It’s good for the ego to win a race,” Deforges said.

“The conditions were pretty tough today so it was good to enter the second run with a good lead,” added Desforges, who led second place Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) by over a second after the opening run. “I took it easier (in the second run) and felt more comfortable.”

Janyk, the defending national Ladies giant slalom champion, held on for second place followed by Marie-Pier Préfontaine (St-Sauveur, QC).

Results from the Men’s giant slalom race were not yet official.

Dedicated volunteers worked extremely hard, battling significant snowfall in the region, to prepare the courses at Stoneham and Mont Sainte-Anne for today’s Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships giant slalom races.

The event continues tomorrow with a Men’s slalom at Le Relais ski hill, followed by a Ladies slalom at Stoneham on Sunday.

A Provincial Dual will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday after the slalom races. This exciting event will feature an “East vs. West” showdown with teams from Québec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia participating.

At the end of each Pontiac GMC Canadian Championship race, a satellite feed will be made available. Canadian television stations interested to receive images from the races are encouraged to communicate in advance with the organizers at the contact information below to coordinate possible special requests.
