Day 6 at The Aussie Open-Vesnina out while Serena Cruises

Day 6 of Australian Open 2017 kicked off in style with some unbelievable stories taking form on Super Saturday.

A sunny day was forecast and Jennifer Brady was aiming to be the shine on Show Court 2 to start the morning.

The American qualifier took on world No.18 Elena Vesnina in her first third round clash at a Grand Slam, and fell down a break early in the first set. The 21-year-old was able to fight her way back and force the opener into a tiebreak, which she took 7-4.

The second opened with Brady immediately on the attack, pressuring the Russian into mistakes and taking control with a double break before comfortably serving it out.

It is now six wins on the bounce, including qualifying, for Brady and she will guarantee her spot in the top 100 for the first time in her career.

She will meet Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who before this week had not won a match at Melbourne Park since 1998, but now has won three consecutive to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for only the second time since 1999.

The Croatian defeated young Greek star Maria Sakkari 3-6 6-2 6-3 to book her spot in the final 16 and continue her fairytale run that included defeating world No.3 Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round.

Lucic struggled with a leg injury throughout the match but was extremely proud to fight through and win the match.

“It was really tough. I battled myself, my opponent, my leg. It was really tough,” she said.

“Wasn't feeling, really, the ball very well. I wasn't moving well. I just told myself, ‘fight’. That's what you can do. The rest you can't control, but you can fight.

“I was really trying to make myself go, and, yeah, I'm really proud of myself.”

Barbora Strycova booked a fourth-round date with Serena Williams after accounting for Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia 6-2 7-5 in the opening match at Margaret Court Arena.
