“I had to be here the whole day, which is, for a new mum, a little tough,” Azarenka said. “Hopefully I won't play like this again.”
Azarenka stuck with her plan, pulling Vesnina as far to the backhand side as she could and then leathering the ball into the space left behind. Once she got her serve up and running – eight aces – she never gave the world No.16 a glimmer of a chance. Vesnina had one break point but it was whipped away from her sharpish.
Heather Watson surged into the Wimbledon third round with an impressive 6-0, 6-4 win over No.18 seed Anastasija Sevastovataking just 61 minutes to claim victory, she will not go onto play Victoria Azarenka.
Johanna Konta had her work cut out for her against Vekic, the No.6 seed saved two set points in the high-tempo opening chapter as she toughed her way to a hugely satisfying 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-8 victory. She is now through to the third round here for the first time in six attempts.
