CONSISTENT JANYK FINISHES FIFTH IN SECOND CORTINA SUPER G

CONSISTENT JANYK FINISHES FIFTH IN SECOND CORTINA SUPER G

CORTINA d’AMPEZZO, ITA (January 21st, 2008) – Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) capped off a very successful week for the Canadian Ladies speed team in Cortina d’Ampezzo, ITA, finishing fifth in today’s World Cup Super G.

Janyk, who has not finished outside of the Top 10 in all nine World Cup downhill or Super G races this season, finished in a time of one minute 26.14 seconds.

“Obviously I want to be on the podium but I think consistency is also really important,” said Janyk.

“This season I really wanted to be a contender everyday. I know with a good clean run I can be up there on the podium and the same goes for Emily (Brydon) and Kelly (VanderBeek),” the 27-year-old Janyk said.

Janyk was just over one tenth of a second behind the lead after the third interval but said a small mistake on the bottom cost her some time.

“They didn’t change the course too much from yesterday because of the snow conditions. So it was a pretty similar course. I was going for it and sometimes you make mistakes. I am happy to be in there. I’m top six everyday this weekend,” said Janyk, who finished sixth in the DH Saturday and was sixth again in Sunday’s super G.

Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC) finished 11th today after placing 3rd in Saturday’s downhill and missing the podium in Sunday’s super G by a mere 0.01s.

Germany’s Maria Riesch, who leads the SG standings with 238 points, won the final Cortina super G in a time of 1:25.73 just 0.04s ahead of Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl. Fellow Austrian Renate Goetschl was third.

Brydon currently sits in seventh in the overall super G standings with 154 points while Janyk is right behind in a tie for eighth.

Kelly VanderBeek (Kitchener, ON), currently ranked 20th in the overall SG standings, crossed the finish line in 13th today while Larisa Yurkiw (Owen Sound, ON) was 36th.

The Ladies World Cup circuit travels to Ofterschwang, GER for giant slalom and slalom races Saturday and Sunday.
