Clijsters overcomes Sharapova to win Cincinnati Open Title
After her disappointing runs at the French Open and Wimbledon Kim Clijsters made a stunning comeback at the Cincinnati Women's Open. She beat 15th seed Maria Sharapova who looked set to win the match in straight sets after an early lead. However it seems Clijsters had her own plans after saving three match points on her own serve and then having time to regroup during a 74 minute rain delay.
"When the rain started falling, I was like, 'Oh, no,'" Clijsters said. "I was feeling like I could hold here and get a chance for a break. She did hold and a double fault from Sharapova lead to 5-5 in the second set. This eventually lead to a tie break in which Clijsters was helped by 2 more double faults by Sharapova eventually winning 7-4. In the third set she raced ahead and overpowered the Russian with a winning display making her one of the favourites to win at the US Open later this month.
