Chohen withdraws from Trophee Eric Bompard because of Injury

Sasha Cohen, the 2006 Olympic silver medalist, three-time World medalist and six-time U.S. medalist, announced today she will not compete at the 2009 Trophée Eric Bompard, the first event in the 2009 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series, because of an injury.

After consultation with an orthopedic surgeon, Cohen was diagnosed with tendonitis in her right calf.

“I have been advised to limit my training for the next few weeks,” Cohen said. “My pain is subsiding, but I have not been able to fully train for Trophée Bompard.”

Cohen says she is confident that she will be ready to compete at 2009 Skate America, Nov. 12-15 in Lake Placid, N.Y.

“I was looking forward to competing in Paris, and I’m sorry I won’t be there,” Cohen said. “However, I’m still excited about the rest of the season and am looking forward to competing in Lake Placid.”

Cohen announced in May her intention to return to competitive skating following a three-year absence. Her last competition was the 2006 World Figure Skating Championships in Calgary, Canada, where she won the bronze.

Cohen trains in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., under the direction of Rafael Arutunian, a former coach of two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan.
