China gain revenge over the Dominican Republic in second leg of China International Women’s Volleyball Tournament

Altagracia Mambru of Cuba spikes against the impressive Chinese block
Hangzhou, China, June 3, 2010 - China overcame the Dominican Republic with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-19) in their opening match of the 2010 China International Women’s Volleyball Tournament second leg in Hangzhou, China on Thursday.

Ma Yunwen led China with 17 points while Li Juan and Hui Ruoqi added nine points each, helping China gain revenge over the Dominican Republic following a 3-1 loss to the side in Luohe on Sunday. Earlier on Thursday, Turkey, who won the first leg, downed Cuba in straight sets )25-16, 25-20, 25-12).

Having recovered from the fever that forced her out of the match four days ago, captain Wei Qiuyue replaced teenager Bian Yuqian to start as setter and led the Chinese women to a 12-6 lead in the opening set.

Wei’s return saw China rejuvenate their versatile attack which was largely absent during the first leg last week.

“Wei is really important in our team, she is irreplaceable,” China head coach Wang Baoquan said following the victory. “Her presence made China a much better team.”

The four-team round robin tournament continues on Friday with China taking on Turkey and Dominican Republic playing Turkey.
