Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallists Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China beat Thailand’s Phokongpoly Yupa and Kamoltip Kulna to take women's gold on Thursday
Muscat, Oman, December 16, 2010 - Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallists Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China won the gold medal in the women’s Beach Volleyball competition at the Asian Beach Games after defeating Thailand’s Phokongpoly Yupa and Kamoltip Kulna 21-9, 21-12 in the final at the Al Musannah Sports City on Thursday.
The victory followed gold medal success at last month’s Guangzhou Asian Games and the Asian Beach Volleyball Championships in Haikou, China.
Zhang Xi hailed China’s tactics after she and Xue Chen clinched a hat-trick of Asian Beach Volleyball titles. "We had very good tactics which we used well throughout the competition," Zhang said. "We played according to the pace that we decided on before the game.
"We were confident that we could win, but Thailand had a strong team. They had great accuracy."
Xue and Zhang aim to continue their success as partners when they compete in the 2011 National Games. "We are happy that we do not need to change partners as we did in 2009," Zhang added.
Earlier, Thailand’s Usa Tenpaksee and Jarunee Sannok took the bronze medal by beating China’s Huang Ying and Yue Yuan 21-19, 21-18.
The defending champions were happy to take third place and will now look forward to a rest. "That was the last game for the season for us," Sannok said. "Now it’s time to go on holiday and not think about anything else.”
