Charlotte Edwards scores first Ashes Test century

Charlotte Edwards scored her first Ashes Test century to lead her team to 181 for eight at the close of play on day one in Sydney today.

The England captain finished unbeaten on 103 after almost five and a half hours at the crease. She hit six fours and faced 277 deliveries as England recovered from a poor start.

After winning the toss Edwards elected to bat in England's 44th Test match against Australia women at Bankstown Oval.

Ellyse Perry made good use of the new ball, bowling straight and trapping both opening batters Heather Knight and Caroline Atkins leg before.

England continued their unsettled start to the day and were on 28 for three in the 15th over when Jenny Gunn joined Edwards to steady the ship.

The pair stood firm to put on 65, comfortably the highest of the innings.

Shortly after lunch Gunn attempted to leave a ball at outside off stump and was caught behind by Alyssa Healy off the bowing of Rachel Haynes leaving England on 93 for four.

England then lost Laura Marsh lbw in the 58th over which brought Katherine Brunt into the middle. Brunt and Edwards put on 29 before the former was also dismissed leg before.

Perry returned with the new ball for Australia in the 81st over and picked up the wickets of Danni Hazell and Isa Guha, leaving England on 147 for eight.

It was left to Edwards with Holly Colvin to see out the remaining overs, adding 34 runs before close of play.

Charlotte Edwards said: "I've always wanted to score a Test hundred against Australia so this is definitely one of my career highlights so far.

"We did lose wickets in the middle today, but the lower order helped me along and contributed some important runs.

"I'm looking forward to getting out there again tomorrow and hope we can push past 200."
