Champions shine on the national stage

Australian vice-captain Karen Murphy and her 18-year-old national teammate Dylan Fisher will be given a further opportunity to pull on the green and gold uniform next year after claiming the National Champion of Champions singles crowns in Queanbeyan.

Murphy, a 418 game international veteran, and Fisher, who made his national debut only five months ago, will look to extend their streak at the nation's premier club-based event when they take to greens in New Zealand for the 2013 World Champion of Champion, qualifying by virtue of today's wins.

"It's an unbelievable feeling, it hasn't really sunk it yet, but I know that it is a great feeling," and elated Fisher said.

"I was really nervous going into the match, which is something I never normally feel but I was lucky enough to get off to a good start and I think that settled the nerves.

"The world event is something I never even dreamed of being able to play in, so it will be an amazing experience and I'm really looking forward to it."

In a fairy-tale finish to the event, Murphy managed to secure a unique slice of history, not only lifting the singles silverware over her upcoming World Championships teammate Rebecca Quail, 21-18, but also etching her name onto the pairs trophy, alongside her 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games opponent, former Scottish international Kay Moran.

The Cabramatta aces may have been heated rivals when they stood toe-to-toe on the Darebin greens in 2006, when Murphy relegated Moran to a silver medal, but the pair now share a bond that will last forever after claiming the national title together this morning.

The pair put the finishing touches on a perfect run, after remaining undefeated in all of their encounters this week, securing the Australian title 22-11 against Victoria's Julia Fairweather and Joy Johnson.

"It's the first national title I have ever won," a jubilant Moran said after her victory.

"I had three runner-ups in Scotland and never won one, so I'm delighted.

"To win it alongside Kaz is even better, it's great playing with the master, it's so settling knowing she is playing behind you."

"We're a good team," Murphy said.

"We play pairs together in everything, we're so used to playing with each other.

"Obviously with winning the double I'm really excited about going to Burnside next year, I just love playing there."
