Cardona first to 6,000 assists in Puerto Rican League

Mayaguez Indians’ setter Michele Cardona, the all-time assist leader of the Puerto Rican Women’s Superior League, reached a historic milestone when she recorded her 6,000 career assist in a match against Caguas Criollas on Thursday.

Cardona executed an effective set for the opposite left-hander Sidarka Nuñez of Dominican Republic during the fourth set of the match.

“At the moment it didn’t came to my mind the milestone, but then I saw the fans standing up and my parents hugging and celebrating," Cardona said. “It was then when I realized it and tears came to my eyes,” Cardona said.

Cardona, a veteran of 14 seasons in the league, entered the match needing 21 assists to reach the 6,000 mark and finished with 24. She is by far the all-time leader followed by now retired Lymaris Rodriguez who recorded 4,771 and Xiomara Molero who finished her career with 4,341.

“It feels great to be the first achieving the mark,” Cardona added. “It is a great honor and I am very proud of the job I have done throughout the years.”
