Canoe European Championships being held in Pontevedra, Spain,

Within the womens classes, 26 year old Abi Coulson and 29 year old Lucy Wainwright will be seeking to build on their recent World Cup successes (silver medal in World Cup 1) in the women’s K2 500m event. Anna Hemmings, five times World Marathon Champion, will also be keen to make a successful entry onto the 2007 Sprint racing scene. She competes in the womens kayak single (WK1) class. Anna has always hoped to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games and has recently started working with new coach Miklos Simon and has been making great progress this season.

John Anderson, British Canoeing’s Performance Director comments,

“The European Championships is an important stepping stone for our team as we work towards the key event of the year, the World Championships and Olympic qualification. Our athletes have prepared well and are looking forward to some excellent racing”.

Team Manager, Alan Williams comments,

“The GBR team had some encouraging results in the early season World Cup competitions. The selections for our Senior European championship team took place following the June regatta. Since then all the national squads have been training hard here in the UK. The training has gone well and athletes and coaches are looking forward to racing at the European Championships. We have very strong crews in all the singles and double events and have made good progress developing our larger crew boats”.

With such talent in the GB team we definitely have the potential to make it very exciting racing indeed!
