CALGARY, AB (October 16th, 2007) –
Woolstencroft was recognized for her outstanding achievement at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Turin, ITA, where she won gold in the Giant Slalom and silver in the Super G. Woolstencroft will be honoured at the International Paralympic Committee awards gala, held as part of 2007 IPC General Assembly in Seoul, Korea, on November 24th, 2007.
“It's an honour to receive this prestigious award and particularly exciting to win alongside Canadians Brian McKeever and the Men's Sledge Hockey Team. This is a testament to Canada’s leadership in paralympic sport," said Woolstencroft, a multiple Crystal Globe winner and member of the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team.
“Lauren is a very determined and hard-working athlete who understands the tremendous amount of effort required to become the best in the world. Her performance at the 2006 Paralympics was great and she is most deserving of this honour,” said CPAST High Performance Director Jean-François Rapatel
Woolstencroft followed up her tremendous performance at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games with a strong performance last season.
In the 2006/07 World Cup season, Woolstencroft was the overall Globe winner as well as overall champion in the Women’s Super G and Slalom disciplines as the CPAST team tied a best-ever performance by finishing fourth in the Nation’s Cup standings, earning 29 World Cup podiums including 15 gold medals.
“Lauren’s leadership has been critical as we continue to pursue the goal of becoming the best alpine ski racing nation in the world. Her performance at the 2006 Paralymic Winter Games was an inspiration and she continues to be a credit to her sport, her team and her country,” said Alpine Canada Alpin Chief Executive Officer Ken Read.
Woolstencroft also won two gold and a bronze medal at the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, USA, giving her three Paralympic gold, one silver and a bronze in her career to date.
Born missing both legs below the knee and her left arm below the elbow, the 26-year-old Woolstencroft started ski racing at the age of 14.
