Britt Janyk wins 13th GMC Canadian Championships title

Janyk trains only Nancy Green in terms of national alpine ski racing titles

CALGARY, AB Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) won the 13th GMC Canadian championship of her career today, picking up her second title of the 2010 event in Nakiska, AB.

The 29-year-old Janyk, who trails only Nancy Greene in terms of national alpine ski racing titles, finished today’s ladies giant slalom race in a two-run combined time of 1:58.68.

“I am just going to keep trying,” said Janyk with a laugh when asked if she could catch Greene’s Canadian record. Greene won 17 titles between 1962 and 1968, during a time in which there was no super-G title available.

Janyk was crowned the 2010 GMC Canadian downhill champion on Monday. This is the fifth GS title of her career, the most for her of any discipline.

“I am just enjoying competing. We have some great skiers in Canada and this week has been a lot of fun,” Janyk said.

“GS is an event that I am trying to get some good results in. I am trying to get in there in order to start World Cups in the top 30 in GS and this will definitely help,” she added.

First-run leader Marie-Pier Préfontaine (Saint-Sauveur, QC) ended up in second place in a time of 1:59.10. Shona Rubens (Canmore, AB) was 0.07s behind Préfontaine’s time in third.

The 2010 GMC Canadian Championships at Nakiska Ski Area conclude tomorrow with men’s and ladies slalom. The GMC March of Champions is also bringing Canada's top slalom skiers to Calgary's Canada Olympic Park tomorrow for a dual slalom event including several 2010 Olympians.
