BRITT JANYK SIXTH IN CRANS-MONTANA LADIES DOWNHILL

Janyk enters World Cup Finals third in Ladies Downhill standings

CRANS-MONTANA, SUI (March 8th, 2008) – Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) will enter next week’s FIS World Cup Finals in third place in the Ladies downhill standings, after finishing sixth in a shortened downhill today at Crans-Montana, SUI.

The race will be televised on CBC’s Pontiac Alpine Ski Series, with coverage beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET / 2:30 MT.

Janyk now has 390 points in the DH leaving her just 58 points behind Austria’s Renate Goetschl for second spot. American Lindsey Vonn has already clinched the top spot in the discipline, with an impressive 755 points to date.

Vonn added to her lead by winning today’s race in a time of one minute 23.57 seconds with Goetschl gaining ground on Janyk with a second place finish. Italy’s Nadia Fanchini was third.

With today’s result, Janyk now has placed in the Top 10 in eight of nine downhill races this season.

“Being consistent has really been the key for me this season. I am shooting for the podium every time but when I don’t achieve that, to be in the Top 6 tells me that I am right there with the top athletes and on any day a podium can happen,” said the 27-year old Janyk, who finished 0.19s off the podium in a time of one minute 24.40 seconds in a race that was shortened due to foggy conditions.

Janyk said she is heading to the FIS World Cup Finals in Bormio, ITA with a goal of finishing second in the downhill standings.

“It’s good competition. (Goetschl) is fighting for second and I am fighting to take that from her. It’s great to be in amongst the top competition battling for a top spot. We’ll just have to focus on having a good race in Bormio and see what happens,” Janyk said.

Kelly VanderBeek (Kitchener, ON), who is currently fifth in the Ladies World Cup DH standings, finished 12th today with Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC) crossing the finish line in 16th. Emilie Desforges (Montréal, QC) was 45th.

The World Cup event in Crans-Montana, SUI continues tomorrow with a super combined.
