British Canoeing

On Saturday 13th – 14th April at the Flatwater racing team selection event held at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham.

The results from the selection event, determined the team selection for international racing in 2007 – an important qualifying year for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

The WK2 (women’s kayak double) 1000m saw Shuna Braithwaite and Jenny Spencer paddling excellently, finishing just behind the C2 (canoe double) men, ousting the pairing of Rachel Cawthorn and Louisa Sawers by 1 second. Lucy Wainwright and Abi Coulson were the hot favourites over the 500m and 200m distance and won both events. Lucy Wainwright added another crown to her collection by winning the women’s K1 race.

Alan Williams, Team Manager comments,

“Qualification for the 2008 Olympic Games is a dream for many GB athletes. Our senior team has some great crews who have clearly set their sights on Olympic Qualification. With three new course records at the April Regatta set by athletes hoping to qualify for the first World Cup competitions the competition for team places has never been tougher. I’m sure the GB flatwater team will continue to improve through the 2007 season”.

This is an exciting start to the racing season, an important year, for selection in Beijing 2008.
