The Brazilian youth women’s team replicated the men’s team triumph at the Youth Women´s South American Championship on Sunday, as they took gold at the first tournament of its kind for South American players under the age of 15 in Canelones, Uruguay.
Maurício Thomas’ team completed the tournament with eight wins from nine matches, culminating in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Peru. Argentina finished third followed by Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Furthermore, three Brazilian players received individual awards with opposite spiker Drussyla elected MVP, middle blocker Amanda receiving the award for best blocker and Luíza taking the best libero gong.
“It was a moment of happiness,” Giulia Gávio, daughter of two-time Olympic champions Giovane said. “My only thinking was that we won the title. This conquest is the result of hard work.”
And the youngster wants to use the tournament as a way to catapult her towards a career in volleyball, following in her mother’s footsteps.
“I want to practice more and more to keep myself in the national team in the next year and to dispute the World Championship,” she concluded.
