Bowls Australia-Ready to Duke it out

Claire Duke's hopes of a second Australian Indoor title remain alive after easing her way into the second round.

The former champion advanced after defeating Canberra City’s Norma Blunden 11-1, 8-7 this morning.

Duke previously won the prestigious tournament as a 21-year-old in 2004.

“The first set was a little bit one sided and then she played a lot of great bowls and put the pressure on me,” Duke said after the match.

“2004 seems ages ago now, that was when I was first starting, I have a lot more experience now and I love playing on the carpet.

“There’s a lot of Commonwealth Games medalists, Australia’s number one, previous winners and a lot of people who really enjoy playing on the carpet still in the mix, and usually the best person wins.”

Port City’s Anna Davidson also advances through to the second round after defeating young gun Cassandra Millerick.

The electrifying match went down to the wire, with Davidson producing a come-from-behind victory after losing the first set, 5-10, 11-6, 3-2.

Warilla’s Vicky Turner will also proceed to round two after comprehensively beating Shirley De La Harpe 14-5,10-1.
