Bowls Australia-Dirty day for defending champions

The opening day of the 2011 Australian Indoor Championships at Tweed Heads Bowls Club has sparked the demise of defending champions Brett Wilkie and Katrina Wright.

Despite playing with a suspected broken hand, Wright failed to successfully navigate her way through to the quarter-finals after losing her second round encounter to Warilla’s Vicky Turner, while Wilkie was a surprise first-up casualty after the world number four was gunned down by Newcastle-based qualifier Richard Hadley.

Trailing 6-7 playing the final end of the opening set, Wright looked in the box position when she held three, but with her final delivery Turner poached the kitty to take the early ascendancy.

With her hand heavily bandaged, Wright seemed to find her stride in the second set, peeling off 14 unanswered shots over seven ends to force a tie-break before the drama really unfolded.

Playing shot for shot, the pair were locked at 2-2 on the third and final end before Turner extinguished the hopes of the world number 26, moving through to a quarter-final showdown with Port Lincoln’s Jackie Field in the process.

During her own second round encounter with Rosny Park’s Debra Lee, Field looked full of purpose as she registered a 9-2, 9-5 win.

Helen Weissner will also progress after defeating Judy Stainton 10-4, 10-5
