Big entry expected for EWGA’s PING tournament.

The 2008 PING Women’s Four Ball Better Ball Tournament of England is about to get underway – and tens of thousands of competitors are expected to take part.

The popular event for English women club golfers attracted an initial entry of 14,000 players in 2007.

This year it has a fresh format with stableford scoring in all rounds, including the Grand Final at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club, and this is expected to appeal to many more players.

The tournament is run by the English Women’s Golf Association and forms part of an annual schedule of 28 events for golfers of all ages and abilities.

EWGA tournament secretary Emma Lowe said: “We are sure the stableford format in all rounds will prove particularly popular and we look forward to welcoming many more competitors in 2008.

“This will be the third year we have run the PING tournament and it has proved to us that women really do like playing better ball golf. The numbers taking part are growing rapidly and I hope that more and more women will enjoy and experience all the tournament has to offer.”

Entry details are being sent to clubs and each of the women who entered last year’s tournament is being sent a sponsors’ pack inviting them to take part in 2008.

It costs just £3 per pair to enter and the competition begins with club qualifying rounds. The top 72 pairs from each region will go forward to their regional final, five of which will be held at Marriott venues.

The sixth regional final will take place at Bowood Park Golf Club in Cornwall, which is joining the tournament rota for the first time. “We hope this location will encourage more golfers from the south-west to enter the tournament,” said Emma Lowe.

The best seven pairs from each regional final will qualify for the Grand Final on Tuesday October 7. The overall winners will hold the PING trophy for a year and receive prizes worth up to £500 (less the value of prizes won in an earlier round). The second-placed pair will win prizes to the value of £100 and the third placed pair to the value of £50

The winners of each regional final will receive PING golf bags and each of the grand finalists will win a pair of ECCO shoes and an item of clothing from PING Collection.

Players at the regional finals and the Grand Final will be able to make appointments for a PING custom fitting or to try the latest PING clubs, including the new Rhapsody range.

The regional finals will be:

Tuesday August 19: Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel & Country Club, Yorkshire.

Thursday August 21: Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel & Country Club, Derbyshire.

Tuesday August 26: Marriott Sprowston Manor Hotel and Country Club, Norfolk.

Thursday August 28: Marriott Tudor Park Hotel and Country Club, Kent.

Tuesday September 9: Marriott Meon Valley Hotel and Country Club, Hampshire.

Thursday September 11: Bowood Park Golf Club, Cornwall.

The Grand Final will be:

Tuesday October 7: Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club, Warwickshire.
