Belarus cruise past Korea, claim last ticket to Rio 2016

áBelarusábeatáKorea,á56-39, in Sunday's Fifth-Place Game áat theá2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT)áto secure the last spot forátheáRio Olympics.


Inspired byáLindsey Harding,áAnastasiyaáVerameyenkaáandáTatyana Troinaá- who combined for 39 points - Belarus return to the Olympics for the first time since 2008.á

Turning Point: Belarus opened the game by scoring the first 12 points.áThanks to someásuffocating defense, they forced their opponentsáinto five turnovers in the opening period, butáthe Koreansáhit two three-pointers and gotáwithiná12-8. The Belarusians did most of their damage in the paint, where they scored 28 of their 56 points. Although Korea tied the contest at 12-12 early in the second quarter, they never led in the entire game.

Stats Don't Lie: Korea leading scoreráKang Ajeong, along witháPark Jisu,áwere kept in check forámost of the contest and finishedáwith a combined 4ápoints.á

Game Hero: As Belarus looked to preventáKorea from mounting any type of comeback, Harding remained cool when her teamáneeded her most and finished witháa game-high 17 points.

The Bottom Line: Although Belarus didn't play the most attractive of games, they made the most of their bigger and taller line-up.áKorea meanwhileápaid the price for making only 3áof their 23 three-points attempts. With the win, Belarus joined theáUSA,áAustralia,áCanada,áBrazil,Japan,áSenegal,áSerbia,áFrance,áTurkey,áSpaináandáChinaáin the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament that will takeáplaceáfrom 6-20 August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
