Atwater Cup win announces Waters' return to WSA World Tour

Alison Waters announced her return to the top level of the women’s game after beating top seed Kasey Brown in the $25K Atwater Cup 2012 in Montreal, Canada.

The 28-year-old Englishwoman had a torrid time in the last two years after batting back to form following Achilles surgery. But off the back of a successful National Championships run, in which she came runner-up as eighth seed, Waters has now won her first WSA title since the Burning River Classic in February 2010.

On route to the final, Waters always looked to be in contention for the title despite her unseeded status. She beat No4 seed Emma Beddoes in the first round, followed by No7 seed Aisling Blake and No2 Joey Chan, looking more assured in every round.

That said, the final was by no means a foregone conclusion. Top seed Kasey Brown had produced a confident string of performances and was yet to drop a game ahead of the final.

She started the game well, settling quicker than her English opponent and duly took the first game. Waters powered back level in the second, upping the pace and mixing the play around the middle. Both players were reluctant to concede ground in the third, and with the scores tied at 9-all, it could have gone either way. Brown’s relentless retrieval helped her to the lead again as she made it 2-1, but Waters' utilisation of the boast made her opponent cover a lot of ground in the fourth and as the energy levels waned, the Englishwoman capitalised.

More relentless pressure from Waters against a visibly tiring Brown saw her establish an early lead in the fifth and final game. Lacking the earlier spring in her step, Brown succumbed to the experienced former world No3, who continues her climb back up the WSA World Rankings.
