7/10 Tokyo (JPN): The first day of women's qualification at the 2011 artistic gymnastics World Championships saw the Romanian team take the top spot at the half-way mark, their team total of 227.228 giving them a 5 point lead on the chasing pack with the majority of the well fancied nations, including Britain, set to compete on the second and final day of qualifications.
Australia currently lie in second place with 221.846 as all nations look to make the top 8, not only to make the team final, but also to ensure full teams for London 2012.
The day’s competitions saw mainly “mixed groups” take to the arena with few full teams competing; Saturday‘s action brings the American, Chinese, Russian, Japanese and the British girls – in the final subdivision.
In the all-around standings, where the top 24 make the final, Romania’s Raluca Haidu leads the way scoring 56.465, followed by Lauren Mitchell of Australia with 56.324 and Celine Van Gerner (NED) 55.465. The gymnasts will also be looking to place in the top 8 on each piece of equipment to make the apparatus finals.
