Alshammar ‘flies’ in Stockholm and leads women’s ranking

Lausanne (SUI), November 14, 2007 – Therese Alshammar delighted her fans in Stockholm by setting a new World Cup record in the first day of the fifth meet of the 2007 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup that took place on November 13-14. In the women’s 50m free, the Swedish star clocked 23.79, smashing the previous mark set by the Australian Lisbeth Lenton in 2005 (23.85). On Day 2, Alshammar won the 50m butterfly in 25.54, establishing the best female performance of the meet (1055 points). With this result, she left Stockholm as the provisional leader of the World Cup women’s ranking - the American Natalie Coughlin, the first so far, did not swim in the Swedish capital.

In the Swedish capital, the medal table was dominated by the host country, with 13 awards (five gold, four silver and four bronze), while the Netherlands and Russia accumulated eight medals (4+2+2). 18 nations got at least one award in the Swedish meet.

The meet schedule is as follows:
• October 19-20 in Durban (RSA)
• October 27-28 in Singapore (SIN)
• November 2-3 in Sydney (AUS)
• November 9-10 in Moscow (RUS)
• November 13-14 in Stockholm (SWE)
• November 17-18 in Berlin (GER)
• November 23-25 in Belo Horizonte (BRA).
