Allison Fisher defeats Kelly Fisher at The WPBAs Great Lakes Classic wins her 2nd Tournament of the year

On Sunday, June 29th, 2008, Allison Fisher faced Kelly Fisher in the finals of the 2008 WPBA Great Lakes Classic at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, Indiana.

The tournament kicked off at 11:00am Thursday morning with very few surprises as most of the top players won their first two matches with relative ease. One notable exception was Korea’s Yu Ram Cha who beat # 14 ranked Jasmin Ouschan in a nail-biting hill-hill match in their first round. Jasmin, coming off of a fantastic finish at the BCA Generationpool.com event, struggled versus the unknown Yu Ram and finished a disappointing 17th.

Anna Kostanian, on a great run this year, missed the TV rounds by one after Allison Fisher defeated her but finished tied for 5th and is now ranked #6 year to date. Jeanette Lee, coming off of surgery last month, finally started feeling like her old self and defeated qualifier Susan Williams before winning versus Kim White and the always tough Gerda Hofstatter before facing Karen Corr in the Quarterfinals. Karen was the fresher of the two players and continued on into the semifinals. Xiaoting Pan and Sarah Ellerby all had good wins over such players as Jennifer Chen, Debbie Schjodt, Joanne Ashton and Monica Webb. Highlights from the final 16 included what could be considered a minor upset when top ranked Monica Webb defeated the Number 2 ranked/seeded player, Ga Young Kim, by a score of 9-7.

Tiffany Nelson ran out of steam versus Allison Fisher, losing 7-9. Karen Corr proved too strong for Dawn Hopkins, winning 9-4. Sarah Ellerby was down 6-3, but came roaring back to defeated Jennifer Chen 9-7. Xiaoting Pan looked to be playing strong against Sarah Rousey, but Sarah rallied back to tie the match up 7-7. Xiaoting held on to win 9-7. Kelly Fisher had a great match with Vivian Villarreal, who kept it close the entire match until tied at 7-7, Kelly pulled away to win 9-7. The match between Jeanette Lee and Yu Ram Cha proved to be the one to watch, as Yu Ram wouldn’t go away and tied things up hill-hill.

Yu Ram attempted a jump shot, and while she hit the object ball, left a run out for Jeanette who went on to finish off the outstanding performer. The Final 8 were whittled down to the Final 4 starting with Allison Fisher, who was too strong for Anna Kostanian and was the first to move into the Semifinals. As previously mentioned, Karen Corr was determined and defeated Jeanette Lee 9-5 in their match. Sarah Ellerby continued to play strong and won versus Monica Webb.

The match to watch in this group was Kelly Fisher versus Xiaoting Pan, who was coming off of her win at the BCA Generationpool.com 9 Ball Championships. Kelly and Xiaoting traded games almost the entire match with neither one giving up any great advantage. Xiaoting missed just one ball in the hill-hill game and Kelly ran out to victory and into the Semifinals.
