ACTION-PACKED ROXY SURF JAM AT WEDGE BEACH.

Durban - the sun burned down, the waves poured through, the girls ripped them all and the wind forgot to blow on the second day of the Roxy Surf Jam presented by Virgin Mobile In Association With Resolution Health. While the rest of the country was defrosting after a bitter cold snap the last few days, the girls on the beach were in bikinis, and competitors were surfing their heats in boardshorts and bikinis, and having a great time about it.

Early standout in the U14 division was Heidi Palmboom from The Bluff, who seemed to be enjoying the right-handers coming through at The Wedge, but in the end it was Bianca Buitendag who ripped the final to take it from local girl Sarah Baum, with Palmboom in third.

Alice McGregor continued her winning ways in the U16 division, showing again that she is going to be a force to be reckoned with when she hits the big leagues. The Roxy Surf Jams are the ideal platform to get South African girls out onto the WQS and then the WCT, and Rosy Hodge has already walked this path. Rosy was recently placed third in the Surfer Magazine Hot 100 Girls Of The World. Alice beat Danielle Johnson into second place, and Tanika Hoffman was third.

The U18 division was a tight affair and had long-running rivals Tarryn Chudleigh, Nikita Robb and Chantelle Rautenbach going wave-for-wave against each other. This time the judges saw it go Chudleigh’s way, with Robb close behind, and Rautenbach third.

The premier U20 division took to the water in perfect conditions with consistent running rights coming through and the odd left. Nikita Robb chose to surf the rights on her backhand, and found some good ones off the bat. She secured two good scores early on in the final and other finalists Rautenbach, Chudleigh and Buitendag, were chasing her for the majority of the heat. At the end it was victory for a stoked Nikita, as well as a nice cheque to take home.
“I mainly stuck to the rights out there,” said Robb of her contest plan. “The other girls were all surfing really well so I knew that I really had to work out there. Such a cool event though. Nice and relaxed and a beautiful day on the beach. So I’m really stoked.”

This is the second Surf Jam of the year, with the final event on the Roxy calendar being the Roxy Wahine Cup in Durban, the biggest stand-alone girls event in the country. The Roxy Surf Jams are extremely popular amongst the female surfers in South Africa, and are proving to be a great springboard to launch our girls onto the Pro Tour. There is also the Roxy Invitational in Mozambique – watch the press for details!

The Roxy Surf Jams are going to be covered on Boardriders TV, which is set for extensive broadcast time on Supersport. Boardriders TV have already committed to covering the events in their entirety, thus giving them loads of airtime.

The Roxy Surf Jams presented by Virgin Mobile in association with Resolution Health, is proudly supported by Saltwater Girl and Roxy Eyewear.
