2013 ANZ Championship Round 13

Thunderbirds clinch Minor Premiership

Adelaide Thunderbirds secured the minor premiership with a storming second half to post a 64-48 win over the Northern Mystics in Adelaide on Sunday.

In a franchise record, Thunderbirds registered their 10th straight win but for the first half, did not look like the top team playing the team firmly anchored at the bottom.

The hard luck story of the season with their high injury toll, the hapless Mystics were the better team through the first half, the Thunderbirds left in chase mode and lacking intensity. However, the home team grew into the game, flexing their collective muscle with a dominant second half to show their true colours.

Coming off the bye, Thunderbirds welcomed back Natalie von Bertouch to an otherwise settled line-up after the captain missed the previous outing with a finger injury.

Mystics run of bad luck continued when it was revealed their most experienced defender Julie Corletto had been ruled out for the rest of the season with a foot injury. It was the fourth defender Mystics have lost this year.

As a result teenager Jess Bourke lined up alongside Kayla Cullen in Mystics defensive circle, Erika Pederson took on the centre’s bib and the rangy Bailey Mes got the start at goalshooter ahead of Cathrine Latu.

The home team made the early running, their withering speed through court stunning the Mystics before a complete reversal handed momentum firmly with the visitors. Mes made a spectacular start once her attack line found their rhythm.
