Irina Smirnova led Russia with 17 points and Viktorya Chervova, Anastasia Konovalova and Tatiana Shchukina contributed 12, 11 and 10 points. Yiting Cao and Zhao Yang had 20 and 18 for China.
“I think we have a better chance against Turkey,” said Russian coach Rishat Gilyazutdinov. “Serbia is a very strong team and I am very optimistic about opportunities against Turkey.”
Serbia won Pool E by defeating Japan in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 26-24. The superior Serbian blocking (18-6) was the difference in the match.
Captain Sanja Malagurski led Serbia with 18 points and Japanese Sayuri Tamura was the highest scorer of the contest with 19 tallies.
In Pool F, Belgium defeated Brazil in four sets 25-19, 17-25, 26-24, 25-19 with Jolien Wittock scoring 34 points to take the first place as the top scorer of the competition.
Finally in Tijuana, Turkey dispatched Dominican Republic in three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-16. Naz Aydemir had 10 points and Ayse Gurkaynak also had 10, including 6 blocks. The best Dominican was Jeoselyna Rodriguez with 10 points.
Now Japan will meet Brazil and Dominican Republic will face Belgium in the round for the 5-8 positions.
Meanwhile in Mexicali, Germany defeated Peru 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-22) winning Pool G. Kira Walkenhorst led the German squad with 21 points.
Italy won Pool H with a 3-0 victory over Puerto Rico (25-12, 25-16, 26-24) with Alessia Gennari totalling 15 points.
Korea finished second in Pool H with a 25-14, 25-9, 25-9 success against Tunisia and USA qualified in the second position by points-ratio in Pool G by defeating Mexico 25-13, 25-23, 25-20.
In the round for the 9-12 positions, Italy will meet USA and Germany goes against Korea in the semi final phase. In the round for the 13-16 places Puerto Rico meets Peru and Mexico will play against Tunisia.
