We put on a great match for the spectators: Lang Ping

China fought a tough battle with Italy and prevailed 3-2 (28-30, 25-22, 26-28, 25-13, 15-10) in the FIVB World Grand Prix Finals at Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center on Thursday. All involved agreed it was a good, tough match.

China coach Lang Ping: I think today we gave the audience a great competition and it was very valuable for our players to learn from these games. In sets one and three we had chances to close the game but we missed those opportunities, but we want to use this experience for the future. We used lots of players today and it’s good they had opportunities to play against Italy because they’re a great team. Hopefully, they can grow and learn from these games.

(Re. selection of players): Actually, we came to the Grand Prix to try and play all the players so they can use the tournament to grow. I don’t want to only play six players. Sometimes like Zhu Ting they are young and she didn’t do well in the first match; she was up and down. So we want to let her watch some games to learn and then come into the game with no heavy pressure. We are trying to develop our young players; this is our goal.

China captain Hui Ruoqi: I’m very happy with the win today. I thought Italy played very good. We saw many videos of Italy playing but they played better than that. They’re very tall, quick and powerful so today’s game was very hard.

China No. 9 Wang Yimei: Today it was a team performance. Italy is a good team and gave us some hard pressure but we fought as a team and won as a team.

Italy coach Marco Mencarelli: We are happy because we played a great match against a great team and we are happy because we played better than yesterday. We made another step towards our best and tomorrow we want to make another step forward. It will be difficult but we will try.

Italian captain Martina Guiggi: It was a difficult game today. We know we can grow more, but we are satisfied with the result, although we know we can do better. Today was a difficult game because China is such a strong team.

Italy No. 17 Valentina Diouf: We took a different approach to yesterday’s game but we missed some easy balls when we could have closed things out.
