Women’s rugby gets a boost in the North

The Rugby Football Union for Women has expanded its work force in the North with the appointment of three Club and Coach Officers (CCOs).

The CCOs, who are three of ten CCOs recently appointed, will be responsible for supporting the development of women’s and girls’ rugby across the region. They will have an extensive remit which will include player development, coach development and club development.

Gordon Piper will be responsible for covering Yorkshire. He said: “What I am looking for in my new job is to make a difference. I want to see more girls playing rugby at clubs, of all ages and abilities, and receiving quality coaching.”

In the North East Rob Thomson has been appointed to the position of CCO. He said: “Having been involved in women and girls rugby in the North East for many seasons the opportunity to help build on the solid foundations up here is a fantastic one. One of the best things about the job will be making the experience young players get when they first start playing rugby the best they have had, and this will encourage them to stay with the game for years to come.

“The clubs have worked very hard to establish themselves and I hope to be able to make them even stronger.”

Mark Harper, who is based in Barrow-in-Furness, is the man in charge of the North West. He added: “I’m looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead.  The opportunity to work with players and coaches throughout the North West was too good to resist.  We have a lot of talented athletes and coaches in the region who are all striving to fulfil their potential so to be in a position to help them is fantastic.”

The appointment of the ten RFUW CCOs across the country has been supported by Sport England who awarded the union £1.4 million over three years in August. These monies have been specifically designated to be spent nationally to support club coach development.
