Hertfordshire’s Lucy Williams leads for England in British girls’ championship

The 18-year-old from Mid-Herts shot a one-over par 73 and is four shots off the lead set by Ana Fernandez de Diego of Spain.

Lucy, who is a member of one of the English Ladies’ Golf Association’s regional Select squads, was a semi-finalist in this month’s English girls’ championship.


She played solidly in her first round at Southerndown with three birdies and four bogeys – and finished off with a string of six straight pars. She is sharing seventh place.

One shot behind her is another Select squad player, Alex Peters, the 13-year-old Midland ladies’ champion from Notts Ladies.

Florentyna Parker, the French lady juniors’ champion from Royal Birkdale, is in a group on 75.

Other leading England players in the field include girl internationals Kelly Tidy (Manchester) 76; Charlie Douglass (Brocket Hall) and Rachel Connor (Manchester) on 77; English girls’ champion Ellie Givens (Blackwell Grange), Raffi Dyer (Hayling) and Hannah Barwood (Knowle) all on 78. Katie Best (Sherwood Forest), who was runner-up in the English girls’ championship, is also on 78 and sharing 49th place.

After the second strokeplay qualifying round the leading 64 players will go forward to the matchplay stages of the chanmpionship.
