Guo Yan defeats World Champion at the Harmony 2011 China Open
Womens Singles Final
"Fatigued" was the word both players used after a long battle between Ding Ning and Guo Yan. Prior to the singles' final, they too already battled out with their respective teammates in a seven-game women's doubles' final.
Guo Yan: "I am very, very pleased with myself as this is the first time in my pro career that I have ever won in both singles and doubles. As you may know, I had a terrible setback after losing to Liu Shiwen in the singles quarterfinals in Rotterdam. Tonight certainly is a vindication that I am still among the best of the best as Ding [NIng] just won her world championship title. It was a very tough match, and both of us have had a very tiring day. However, my double victories today can definitely be viewed as a breakthrough in my professional career. "
(Guo was so thrilled when she won the last point in the final that she threw her bat away and waved to the crowd. She later reflected that the move was totally spontaneous at the moment.)
Ding Ning: "I must say I had a good run here at the China Open, although I fell short in both finals. It is always a hard-fought battle when you are up against your teammates. Also, I normally don't feel too comfortable playing against choppers. In this tournament, however, I have proven otherwise. I am really proud of myself. Overall, I am satisfied with my effort here. "
(Ding Ning finished third in last year's singles in Suzhou.)
Women's Doubles Final
GUO Yan CHN / GUO Yue 4-3 v DING Ning CHN / LI Xiaoxia: 9-11,8-11,10-12,14-12,11-9,11-6,11-6
Guo Yue: " We two are still in the process of getting to know each other in doubles as partners. As a result, we were not completely there in the first three sets at such a highly competitive level.
However, we got better and better as time marched on, and we never lost our confidence."
Li Xiaoxia:"It was a tough final. We had a relatively smooth sailing in the first three sets. However, we made some crucial and costly errors in the fourth set, allowing our opponents to catch up and get into the match, which was fatal to us. That's the reality we have to grin and bear it."
(Guo Yan did not attend the press conference due to her preparation for the singles' final, neither did Ding Ning for the same reason. )
