England’s girls miss out on European medal chance

It means they miss out on a place among the top eight nations who go into the championship matchplay flight to contest the medal positions.

England, who finished two shots behind eighth-placed Belgium, will now play in the second flight – and their aim is to win that division, which also includes Ireland and Scotland.

Team captain Sarah Miller said: “We have to jolly well make sure we come top of the second flight. That’s what we’re playing for now.”

The result was disappointing because England had been lying second after the first qualifying round, four over par and one shot behind Germany.

But while most of the main contenders improved their scores in the second round, England’s team total was 10 shots worse and they finished the 36 holes on 18 over par.

County Durham’s Ellie Givens did provide England with a battling finale to the second day. She was the team’s last player on the course and after reaching the turn at six-over she came home in two-under for a 76.  The team’s best scorer in the second round was Gloucestershire’s Hannah Barwood on 75.

The best three scores from four counted each round. England results: Ellie Givens (Blackwell Grange)  71, 76. Kelly Tidy (Manchester) 72, 79.  Hannah Barwood (Knowle) 77, 75. Rachel Connor (Manchester) 77, 79.

Denmark topped the qualifiers for the first flight on five over par, followed by Germany +6, Spain +9, France +11, Sweden +12, Netherlands +15, Norway +15 and Belgium +16.
